(Gray News) – A microchip company has abruptly gone out of business, affecting pet owners nationwide.
If your pet has a microchip from the company, called Save This Life, you are urged to re-register your pet’s microchip with another company ASAP.
That’s because if your pet has its Save This Life microchip scanned, owner information and data will no longer pop up, causing potential disaster if your pet gets lost. Your pet’s microchip will be untraceable.
A Facebook post from one animal shelter in San Diego, Animal Rescuers without Borders, explains step-by-step what pet owners should do to check if they are affected by Save This Life closing.
- Find your pet’s microchip number. You can check your pet’s adoption papers or medical records to find the number, or have it scanned at a veterinarian’s office or animal shelter.
- Look up the number to see what company it is registered with. You can use the American Animal Hospital Association website here, which will tell you what company the chip is registered with.
- If the chip is registered with Save This Life, re-register it with another company ASAP. Some reputable options include AKC Reunite, PetLink, 24PetWatch, and HomeAgain. Make sure your contact information is up to date.
Animal shelters encourage you to spread the word with other pet owners about Save This Life’s abrupt closing and prompt them to check their pets’ microchips.
